I would've never believed you if you would've told me in 2015 that I would one day be celebrating my store's five year anniversary.
In 2015, I was years removed from the college degree I earned, working dead-end jobs that gave me no real sense of purpose, and working for people who told me I was "too much," "not a fit," or to "tone down."
I'm not entirely sure how it happened, but I was watching "The Mindy Project" starring Mindy Kaling and I remember thinking, "what would Mindy do?" The wheels in my head started turning and I went to a Michael's Craft Store, bought a blank tee and a tiny screen print set, and made my first tee. I created an Etsy store and listed the tee. I created an Instagram and started posting pictures of the tee.
One morning, some weeks later, I woke up in my 300 square foot San Diego studio to the sound of incoming text messages from my friend on the east coast. I rubbed my bleary eyes and the text read, "MINDY KALING REGRAMMED YOU." In the 2010s (and today), a co-sign regram is everything and to receive it from the very subject of my work was a shock. Orders came in and I had a choice. Do I use the profit I made from these sales for personal use or do I invest it into some better equipment and create a business?
Totally Good Time officially launched that day.
As I move forward, you all have helped me create a vision and curate a collection of apparel. Our unified love of 90s nostalgia and pop culture has molded what Totally Good Time has become today. I set out to make pop culture apparel desirable and you help me achieve that in the messages you send me, the photos you post, and the videos starring you.
In the words of Meredith Grey, you are my person. Thank you for being here. Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for seeing me. It's because of you that I am free to be me. I'm a guy that wants to do some good, make you feel good about what you have on, and create a connection between what you're wearing and what we are putting into the world.
Many thanks to all the friends of the shop who have placed orders, shared content, written messages, published pieces, collaborated, taken photos, starred in photos, and anyone else who supported my small business.
If you have a dream....if you have an idea, keep going. Don't stop, you can do it. Surround yourself by the people who support you. Stay hungry, stay inspired. Bad days will turn into next days. Bad ideas could turn into good ideas. Bad times can turn into good times.
